Ten years ago today, Christchurch, New Zealand, was struck by a devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of 185 people and caused widespread damage to the city.
The magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck at 12:51 p.m. on February 22, 2011, and was centered just 10 kilometers southwest of the city center. The quake caused widespread liquefaction, which turned parts of the city into a muddy quagmire, and triggered numerous landslides and rockfalls.
The earthquake also caused significant damage to Christchurch's infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. Many buildings were severely damaged or completely destroyed, including the iconic ChristChurch Cathedral.
